Sea Life Park
July 5, 2009
My niece (11 years old) and my nephew (8 years old) were visiting from Los Angeles. They wanted to go to either the Waikiki Aquarium or Sea Life Park. I didn't feel like the hassles of Waikiki on a weekend, so we (actually me) decided to go to Sea Life Park. It's fairly close to my house. Even better.
It was a beautiful day. Bright blue skies, a few clouds and brisk trade winds to offset the hot sun. Sea Life Park has kama'aina rates (discounts for Hawaii residents) so that was a bonus. The sea lion show was almost over when we arrived. The kids wanted to grab some lunch so it was off to the Sea Lion Cafe for some overpriced burgers. It's really lame amusement park food. What did I expect? Now it was time for the dolphin show.
The show at Dolphin Cove was entertaining. Atlantic dolphins, Pacific dolphins and a whalfin (whale-dolphin hybrid) were the performers. The announcer was a bit over enthusiastic but I guess it's a requirement for a tourist attraction like this. I particularly liked the backdrop - a fantastic view of the ocean. The show lasted around 30 minutes. According to the events schedule we had 45 minutes to kill before the Hawaii Ocean Theater Show. Time for ice cream.
Ice cream finished, we headed to the Ocean Theater Show. This one wasn't as impressive. The show began with the trainers taking the penguins and sea lions on a walk through the crowd. Now it was time for the dolphins. It was almost the same thing as the dolphin show - jumping, various tricks and interaction with the trainer. The show was over and the kids began walking slowly. They were running out of energy. They wanted to leave. We had been there for 4 hours. Plenty of time for Sea Life Park.

Interact with Sea Life
On the windward side of Oahu in the town of Waimanalo is Sea Life Park. They try to provide an interactive experience for the visitor. Most people just walk around and look at the exhibits and sit in the audience for the dolphin show, sea lion show and the ocean theater show. The trainers make the animals perform various stunts. Jumping high in the air, spinning hoops, pushing trainers on surfboards, just to name a few. The shows are entertaining.
There are also opportunities to feed some of the animals. At designated times you can purchase special food for the turtles. It's actually rather dull. You toss lettuce into a pool and the turtles swim to get it. It's more interesting to watch the sea lion feeding.
If you want a truly interactive experience, sign up for the Dolphin Adventure and swim with the dolphins. The Hawaiian Ray Encounter brings you face to face with the stingrays as you snorkel in the stingray lagoon. The Sea Lion Discover allows you to swim with the sea lions. Want more? The Sea Trek Adventure takes you 18 feet down into the reef tank while you wear a special diving helmet.
The basic admission price is $29 per adult. I think it's a fair price considering what the park has to offer. However, if you sign up for an interactive adventure the price of admission is included. It's recommended to make a reservation if you want to do a dolphin or sea lion encounter. The park food isn't that good, but that shouldn't be a surprise. I also thought that their reef tank wasn't very good.
