Cost of things in Honolulu

I am frequently asked if it is expensive to live in Hawaii. My answer is yes. That's what happens when you live on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. To illustrate how much things cost in Honolulu, I have put together a list of different things I have purchased or taken note of.

Housing
As of March 1, 2009, median home price in Honolulu is $610,000. It is the highest in the nation. The most expensive part of home ownership is buying the land. Oceanfront and most mountain ridges are usually the costliest properties.

I noticed that the cost of living is very high in Hawaii when I was visiting Maui in '06. Definitely for those items that shipped a long way from the continent really add some weighs on the price tags!
