The Summary
Santa Rita is Maya ruin located beneath the City of Corozol west of the mouth of the Rio Nuevo. It is a Classic period trade center. This location permitted easy control over coastal and inland trade routes on the Rios Nuevo and Hondo. Archaeological evidence documents trade routes far inland. Urban growth of the modern town has cause significant information lose. Occupation began prior to 2000BC and continued after the arrival of the Spanish. All visible structures are from the Classic period.
