The Summary
Cahal Pech "Place of ticks", a Maya ceremonial center of 10 sq, miles and 34 structures on the south side of San Ignacio, Belize. A 15 minute walk from San Ignacio. First occupied prior to 1500 BC. Jade trade began prior to 1000 BC. Monumental building began prior to 300 BC. The site was abandoned by 800 AD. Acropolis is 900' above sea level on the west bank of the Macal River. There are pyramid temples, palaces, a ball court, 5 stelae and an altar. Hrs 9-4:30; Site & museum fee $2.50 each.
