The Summary
Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the Mesoamerican Maya civilization. It is located in the the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala at Lat. 17°13′19″N, Long. 89°37′22″W. Tikal is in Guatemala's Tikal National Park. Flores is about 40 miles to the southwest of the ruins. Construction of monumental architecture began prior to 300 BC. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan prior to 400 AD. Tikal was abandoned by 900 AD.
