A Trip to the Summer House
We next traveled out to the summer house in Mussalo. To get to the summer house we took the ferry from Taivassalo to Mussalo. We were able to just relax and have fun out there. Boating, fishing, and all other watersports are popular in that area. It was nice to get out on the water but I will say that as a Miami girl I found the water way too cold for swimming. I believe I would have needed a wetsuit to get in that water!!!! I would guess the water temperature to have been about 70 degrees...or maybe even colder.
One of the biggest differences that was sprung on me was the outhouse...I didn't even know people still used outhouses!!! The outhouse was far into the woods and it was a little strange having to go out there in the middle of the night with all the wild animals. And of course, my husband had to tell me about the wolverines, wolves, moose, lynx, and foxes that lived out there.
Another new experience was the Finnish tradition of sauna. That was fun although I passed on jumping in the ice-cold water afterwards.
Oh, and did I mention drinking? We did lots of that out there!
