traveling in Canada! From Vancouver, Vancouver Island, the Inside Pasage to Alaska for one day. Through the Rocky Mountains and the prairie of Alberta to Calgary.

Royal Tyrell Museum

This morning we leave Banff and the Rocky Mountains. As we drive east and the mountains disappear from our rear view mirror we travel through large fields and open country, were lonely farmhouses are stuck in the middle of these endless fields.

We stop at Drumheller to look over horseshoe canyon and then drive on to the world-famous Royal Tyrell museum which is all about dinosaurs. This is splendid museum where you can spend many happy hours learning lots about the dinosaurs and admiring their bones. We drive back to Drumheller for the night. This place is also all about dinosaurs. On every street corner there is a plastic dino to be admired…

We camp on a tiny spot at the Dinosaur Trailer park.

Dinosaurs...
Not far from the city centre of Drumheller is the Dinosaur Trailer Park. When we stayed here, the beginning of October 2006 it was a bit of a sad place. It looked like people live here all year. The first spot they told us to park was too small for our RV and we damaged the roof of the RV while trying to squeeze in this tiny space. After some discussion we got appointed a slightly bigger spot somewhere between two other RV’s.
The facilities (like the toilets, the showers and the laundry facilities) were reasonably clean. The location of the Dinosaur Trailer Park is not far from the city centre of Drumheller. You can easily walk there to shopping or visit a restaurant (we ate at a good Chinese restaurant).
It is a good place for one night. I would not stay here any longer.
Great Museum
Six kilometers outside of the town Drumheller (about four miles) is the Royal Tyrell Museum located. This really is an awesome place! You can easily spend several hours here looking at the dinosaur skeletons (from a Tyrannosaurus Rex to the smaller V-raptors) and the exhibitions about the different time zones. Besides the museum-exhibitions there is the preparation Lab where we can watch fossils being prepared by Museum technicians for research and display. And there are some interactive programs.
Some of these long extinct animals were found in the nearby Dinosaur Provincial Park.
The whole experience is quite impressive. You don’t have to be a dinosaur-lover to love this place!
