Worst Bush Fires in Australian history

Running from the fire (not my photo)

I love living in Australia and I love all this country has to offer, including the long hot summers. However, with the gorgeous heat comes the devastation of bushfires. This year, as new as it is, we have seen the worst bushfires in Australian history. The official toll of lives lost remains at 181 this morning, but that figure is expected to rise steeply as the grim search continues through the rubble of townships virtually wiped out by the fires.

There have been stories of loss that have moved me to tears of sorrow. I have also been moved to tears of joy with stories of survival and of families reuniting after days of not knowing where each other are, only to find each other covered in soot and ashes at one of the relief centres housing the 5000 people left homeless.

In amongst all the chaos, there are other stories to bring joy to your heart. One of these stories is of a baby koala who overcome by heat sought shelter under a house where the owners of the home filled a bucket with water and watched in awe as the koala first tested the water with its paw, then took a drink and then, still not satisfied, climbed into the bucket to cool down. I have managed to find some photo the family took to share with you.

I want to thank my friends who have sent messages to check on me and send their best wishes. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

Nice words Elke... I did a blog about the same time with my outrage about certain events, if they did or did not happen!!! I used to live in a town called Rockhampton which was surrounded by hills and EVERY summer there would be bushfires... luckily they never came too close to me or caused too much devastation... but I was lucky!

I kindly suggest to everyone that read this message to make a donation to help the people and wildlife.

Open your heart...most of the fires has been caused by the humans (well..can't be definied human who commit such a crime)...

Australian Red Cross...
