Exploring the city
21 October 2006:
The second day we’ve visited the main sights of Dublin. We started to walk around some buildings without any name. Well better say: I can’t find the name back. So if anyone knows it? I really appreciate it when you tell me J
On the way we saw a sign of George Bernard Shaw.
This is the place where he have lived in the younger years. George Bernard Shaw was an Irish play writer.
We walked further and arrived at the St. Kevin’s Church. I guess it was at this church. Me and my mother were walking around and made some pictures. A man came to us and start talking. He invited us to come inside to see a church service. Since we told him we were of the Netherlands he start talking Dutch. In about 30 minutes we decided to leave since we had to visit much more.
The next church we saw is called: Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The only thing that I know, the church looks scary. It’s more like a ghost house but I’m sure it is not.
A few streets later there was a stone with a picture and a name of: John Field. He was an Irish composer and pianist.
And again there was another church.
They are all very beautiful here. The name of this church is: Christ Church Cathedral. We just walked next to it on the way to the Guinness Storehouse. Guinness is the beer of Ireland. It’s very dark and different taste then the normal beer like Heineken. I did not try it since I don’t drink alcohol but my mum did. But before you could try it, there was a possibility to see how they make this beer. Interesting to see.
But it’s a long walk to find the Storehouse. When you arrive there it feels like you are some centuries back.
Guinness is not the only drink of Ireland. There is also the very known ‘Irish whiskey’. But before we went to the museum of it, we saw another big building. This one is called the ‘City hall of Dublin’. Unfortunately there is not so much to tell about it.
Ok, back to my story about the alcoholic drinks. When we arrived at the museum of the Irish Whiskey we had to wait for about 30 minutes. It was a bit busy you can say.
They made a group and we got a guide and he showed us how everything works, to make the whiskey. It was interesting to see and at the end you could taste it. The same as beer, I did not try since I don’t drink alcohol. My mum did.
It was pretty good if I’ve to believe her.
We walked back to the city, the weather was much better and fortunately we were lucky to see the ‘Penny bridge’ with good weather.
The last church we’ve visited is called: St Audoen's Church. It is the oldest parish church in Dublin. We walked to it and made some pictures. Beautiful church but it seems more like a ghost house as well.
In the evening we had to have dinner. We were told to go to Hard Rock Café. They should have good food. Because we did not have any information it was hard to find it. After a walk of 20 minutes we gave up and decided to find another restaurant. We went to right side and the first restaurant we saw was: Hard Rock Café. The food was simple but very good. Even the service.
Because we still did not see the Trinity College we decided to go there. After a short walk we arrived over there and went inside. I really did not know a college could be so huge as this one. It’s great to see. It is the oldest university of Ireland.
One hour later we left this building and went back to the hotel.
