Playing Cowgirls & Cowboys, yeah! :)
February 7, 2009
Usually when you think about Puerto Rico, the first idea you get is a gorgeous beach which is true, but you don't have to forget the rain forest. Today we would visit a National Park, but before that we would become cowgirls and cowboys, yay! Our first stop was "Hacienda Carabali" where we could rent horses to ride around the property.
When we arrived, the rain was over, yay! Don't TB's have good luck? We registered ourselves. Everyone who wants to ride, has to sign a paper, haha. They were getting ready our horses while we were waiting for 2 other people. They were Kary and Gilberto, both Francisco's friends. Francisco was calling them to check if they were close, haha. Around 15min later they arrived. Now we were ready :)
We had to wait for a bit more - of course in the meanwhile I was taking pics - and then they finally called the 7 people group: "el grupo de 7!" I have ridden a horse just once in my life and it was a long time ago, when I was a little girl. .. actually it was a pony, haha, and I hardly remembered about that, mmm. Hope I wouldn't do it too bad, haha.
One by one our horses were coming. First Marks, then Jasons, the 3rd one was "Sensacion" that would be mine, hehe. All the horses were brown except of Jess', mmm. Did it mean anything? We didn't think so, until we found out the white horse was stubborn, haha. Our guide joined us. Actually we didn't need a guide very much, the horses already knew where to go ;)
Ok, first problem: how do I start this thing?, haha. The guide told us we had to blow kisses, so the horse would start to walk and then run, haha. These horses liked to be treated with love, haha. Since I wasn't an expert cowgirl, I hardly took any pic while we were ridding, but Francisco did and I'd steal them :P
By the way, the horses liked to follow the others. If Francisco's was running, all the others wanted to do the same too. It was fun, but why these things don't have cushions??? Note: don't ever wear shorts again for ridding a horse... anyway it was fun and a new experience, hehe.
The landscape was beautiful, all the greenery was lovely. We could see some cows and other farms nearby. It was warm, but not too much, so the weather was perfect too. Around 1 hour later we were back at the beginning. This experience was great and I survived! haha. Well, we didn't have much time left since Mark had to catch a flight early in the afternoon and we still had another stop in our agenda.
Well, we would just have to do the trekking fast, but before that eating a snack to get energies for later. Oh! I couldn't believe it. It started to rain... well does the name rain forest say anything??? haha. Just hope it would stop by the time we arrive to our next destination...

Riding horses in an Hacienda - Hacienda Carabali
If you want to explore an hacienda, but didn't like the idea of do it by walking, I'll suggest you to ride a horse.
Francisco suggested us to take the horse tour and it was a great idea. It's located in Luquillo not 1 hour from San Juan. The hacienda offers different kind of tours, including ATV, Mountain bikes and of course the Horse Riding.
You don't need a reservation for the Horse Riding, just show up and wait until your horses are ready. The horses know the road, but a guide will always join you. You can ask for an English or Spanish tour.
There are 2 kinds of tour: 1 hour or the 2 hour long one. We took the 1st and 1 hour was enough.
During the ride you will enjoy not only the Caribbean sunshine, but also a peaceful and green scenery. If you haven't ridden a horse before, don't be worried. These horses are well trained and the guide is always aware of all the members of the group.
They have also a restaurant that serves snacks, but after the hacienda we visited El Yunque which is very close and awesome and didn't want to waste any minute, hehe.
