Knowing and enjoying "mi viejo San Juan..." (my old San Juan) :)
February 5, 2009
It was 6 something when we arrived to San Juan. The trip was short and we enjoyed it. San Juan looked so lovely with all the lights. Yes, it was a Spanish colony, so it reminded me the old part of Lima ;) Francisco was an excellent guide and told us some of the history of the city and country, while we were leaving the harbour and walked to see the walls that surrounded the city.
The night was perfect, warm but not too much so we could walk without any problem. We were listening to our history lessons, while we were taking pics of the beautiful surroundings. This city has a lot of history. We kept on walking until we arrived to the "Paseo de la Princesa", which offers amazing views of San Juan Bay and the colonial wall. There was an exhibition going on, where you could see interesting pictures of Puerto Rico and other places. Our group looked a bit like a tourist one, whit a guide (Francisco), haha. I was thinking that for myself, but I wasn't the only one, since I noticed a couple of guys that stopped behind us, just to listen to Francisco, lol.
While we were there we saw a nice cafe and after checking the menu, we decided to go in. We didn't have plans for dinner except having something Puerto Rican. Francisco was a bit afraid this place would be just a tourist's one, but agreed to try it since it looked so nice! And no regrets at all. All the tables were outside, which was perfect since the night was warm. We got a nice table just in the middle. You'll see the pictures, the place was perfect. The waiter came shortly to take our order. First the drinks, we were in Puerto Rico, so something with Rum for me :) I got a Daiquiri, Mark a Mojito, Nancy a Medalla light (the local beer which just has a light version. .. funny) and Francisco a Pina Colada.
Then we ordered the food, which took as a bit long since we didn't have any idea about what to order, haha. Nancy was the 1st to order: "Chorizo al vino" which is sauted sausage with sherry wine; Mark asked for a Mofongo. I have been told the Mofongo is a MUST here. I wanted to order it too, but I wasn't too hungry plus still had some days to taste it, hehe. The Mofongo is mashed plantain fried, stuffed with beef, chicken, fish, crab or shrimps. Well, Francisco and me weren't that hungry, so we ordered "Antojitos de aqui" which was a platter of Puerto Rican appetizers, including the alcapurrias, fried cheese, mofonguitos (little mofongos) and cornsticks. No need to say the food was very yummy! We were talking about the plans for the next days and who else would join us. I had a great time here, but it was time to keep on moving or we wouldn't be able to do all the things we planned before party time :)
Well in order to go to the city itself, we had to cross the wall. Of course we would do it the right way, going through the main entrance. But to achieve the main entrance we had to walk for a bit. Which was really nice, since we had the opportunity to do a bit more of sightseeing while we walked through the "Paseo del Morro" enjoying the nice view of the bay at our left side and the wall and the city at our right. Of course we took some pics and made fun, lol. While we were walking, Gladys - a local friend of Francisco - called him, letting him know she was in her way to Old San Juan and was waiting for us, yay! the more the merrier, yay!
Finally we got into the city. It's a beautiful city and the cities made it so lovely, awwww. We saw the "Casa de Gobierno" and I got my traditional pic with a cop, haha. The streets with bricks and balconies reminded me a bit of Cusco or Arequipa - without the hight hills - and balconies in Lima. Well, we both have Spanish influence, hehe. We were walking around downtown, arrived to the main square, saw the Cathedral and kept on taking pics.
Gladys called again. She already parked and was waiting for us to join her. We went to a bar called Nono's to have a couple of drinks. First we were thinking about dancing, but it was Thurs and not much was going on, so better go to one of San Juan's most traditional bars. We sat in the balcony and enjoyed our drinks. The city looked so quiet, but it would be different during the weekend.
It was so good Nancy could join us, but she had to leave early, since she had school the next morning and it was getting late. Well, but not late for us. So, we decided to stop in another club. Mark and me would wait there for Gladys and Francisco while they drove Nancy to her car. Hopefully she'd join us the next day. This club was very nice and had live music. So you can stay inside, drink and dance or go to the balcony. About 20min later Francisco and Gladys arrived. The 4 of us were chilling out and also dancing, hehe. Well, we didn't stay too long. Mark and I were a bit tired of our flights and also we had to wake up early tomorrow to visit the caverns.
But it didn't mean we went straight to the hotel. We stopped at the beach. What for? "The noche de San Juan" (San Juan's night) according to a tradition, you have to go into the sea at night so your wishes would become true. I did it, but just until my knees. Francisco did it properly and got all wet, lol. haha, we had a blast, haha. This day was full of fun and was just the Pre-Met Up, mmm could hardly wait for the next morning...

Incredible views of San Juan Bay and the City Walls - Paseo de la Princesa
"Paseo de la Princesa" or Princess' street is located in the southern tip of Old San Juan. If you took the ferry to visit this area, you'd land just walking distance from it. It connects the port to the city gate.
Paseo de la Princesa goes around the curved walls of the old city. It's lined with statues, fountains, palm trees and when we were there there was an exhibition of photos.
You can get amazing views of the Bay, nearby islands, an old Spanish prison, and at the end is the fountain that marks the street’s end. The old prison which lends the street its name, is now home to Puerto Rico’s tourism office. But maybe the most impressive are the city walls. Of all the attractions in the Old San Juan, this is one of the most visited spots because what you see changes with the time of the day. We were there at night and the night views were breath taking.
If you visit it during the day / afternoon, look for a kiosk and get a traditional fruit drink called Piragua. When we were there, it was late, but we found a really nice cafe.
I recommend to visit it. It's great and free!!!

Charming out door cafe on Paseo La Princesa - Cafe La Princesa
It’s a nice and open place close to Old San Juan, to be exact they are located on the Paseo de la Princesa.
Since it’s an open place, it’s perfect for the warm days, which are the most in San Juan. Just avoid it during the rain. Love the atmosphere here. The tables are situated in a nice patio under the trees. There was a dj and a stage, so I assume they have live music. Unfortunately they weren’t playing when we were there. But I could listen to the coquis – hehe
The kitchen is open, so you can look how they are cooking the dishes and also had a nice bar area.
Ok, now talk about the food. Since this is a touristy area, you’d be able to find Puerto Rican food on the menu. It was good, but don’t get too excited. Personally I think that if you want to get the real taste, you have to go where the locals go. But the food was very good. We tried the famous mofongo (fried plantains stuffed with beef, pork or shrimp) and a platter of Puerto Rican fried appetizers calles Antojitos de aqui" which included the alcapurrias, fried cheese, mofonguitos (little mofongos) and cornsticks. To drink they have different options including cocktails with rum and other spirits.
Our waitress was helpful and had patience with us, explaining what were the dishes about, hehe.
If you are looking for real Puerto Rican food, maybe this is not the best place, but if you are around and want to relax and chill out, this place is definitely a great option. After walking around Paseo de La Princesa, this is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a nice outdoors location.

A great walk before going into the city - Paseo del Morro
The trail is located within the San Juan National Historic Site. If you are walking around Old San Juan, pass through San Juan Gate and take a stroll on Paseo del Morro. We did the opposite. We were in our way to Old San Juan and stopped here first to finally cross the gate ;)
This half-mile path runs between the Atlanltic ocean and the old city walls. While you are there you can enjoy nice views from the ocean, the bay and also historic vistas from the walls that surround the city. You can visit it at different hours, always getting amazing views. There are benches, so if you get tired, just sit down and enjoy the breeze.
The walls are huge and same as in the old cities they were used to protect the city from invaders. At the end there is a gate “San Juan gate”, just cross it and you would go into the nice city of San Juan and enjoy all its colonial beauty.
It’s a nice and relaxing walk and as the best things in life is free!

Nice bar with balconies in Old San Juan - Los Balcones de Nono's
We visited this bar during our Pre Meet-Up, after doing sightseeing in Old San Juan. This bar is located in Old San Juan, right on Calle de San Sebastián. This street is full of bars which go for over 3 blocks on either side of the street. Somehow it reminded Barranco to me. Nono’s is a sports bar at the end of the street. So, no way you’d miss it.
This place has 2 floors. At the first floor you can find a bar and some tables. Don’t expect anything fancy. The bar is housed in a colonial style building, looking a bit rustic and traditional. We didn’t stay downstairs. Francisco recommended us to go to the upstairs area that has pool tables and balconies. Of course the main drink served here was the Bacardi Rum, but you can find different kind of liquors too. We got our drinks and went to the balconies. There you get a great view of a nice square and the lovely streets.
I’ll recommend you to visit Nono’s if you are in Old San Juan and look for a fun and laidback bar with Puerto Rican style and good music. I can see why the locals like this bar.

Salsa nights in Puerto Rico at Banana's Cafe
Because of the name, you might think that Banana's Cafe is a cafe, but not at all, although you can find food there, haha. This is a club located in Isla Verde - San Juan.
They have 2 floors, the first one has some tables and a bar, but the action takes place in the second floor. There you can find a dance floor, live music, bar, tables and a balcony for the people who would like to smoke or chat since inside it could be a bit difficult.
We went there on a Thursday, which is the Salsa day, yay!!! That day they have live music and you'd have to pay a cover fee, which is not expensive.
The bartenders are friendly and wouldn't let you be thirsty, haha. The atmosphere of this place is very nice. It has a good vibe. I noticed they also have karaoke, but don't know which day of the week.
The stage where the band performs is in a corner and in front of it you have the dance floor, although you can dance whereever you want. At least we did so, hehe. At the balcony you have wi-fi. While the band is taking a break the dj would play some latin music to keep you in the mood for keep on dancing and enjoying the night.
Regarding the prices of the drinks they are average to Puerto Rican standards.
