Going under earth's surface - amazing Camuy Caverns :)
February 6, 2009
Not even 1 hour later we were arriving to our destination. Well it wasn't so easy to find this place. Francisco has been here once, but a long time ago and we got a bit lost, we asked a couple of people down the streets, lol. Nevermind we succeded and found the place. Our destination was: "Cuevas de Camuy" or Camuy Caverns.
It was early, so we didn't have any problems for finding a free parking spot. Furthermore, we had our special pass thanks to Mark, haha. We got our tickets at the entrance and they let know there was a video we had to watch before starting the tour itself. The video has just started 1min ago, so we caught it and avoided to wait until the next one, yay!!!
As its name says, these are caverns you can visit. The Camuy river formed amazing caverns surrounded by a lovely vegetation and the stalactites and stalagmites in the interior are awesome! In order to go down to the entrance of the caverns, we should take a trolley, but before boarding they gave us helmets. Security was first. Now, it was time to go on the trolley. Our guide came and we were ready to go. Our group was small. Well, it was better this way, hehe, almost a private tour ;)
Going down was nice. It was great seeing all the vegetation that was surrounding us. Sure, we have rain forest in Peru, but I haven't been able to really explore it, so this was my 1st contact with it and I loved it! The deeper we went, the more vegetation we were able to see. After turning left, right, left, we finally arrived to the station where the walking would start.
We started to walk down and stopped at the entrance of the caverns, gorgeous!!! Our guide gave us a few recommendations before going inside and that was it. All the stalactites and stalagmites were amazing, so big! And they formed funny shapes, like a man smiling - the guide said it was a taino (local Indian) welcoming us - a witch and a love couple, lol.
We also went close to the Camuy river. Well, it was down but you could listen to it as if it were really close, actually was beneath us. We also could see a waterfall. We got a bit wet, but felt nice, since it was warm.
Of course in the cave there were bats. We couldn't see them, but Francisco got bat's poo - poor him!!! Well, in Lima we say that if you got birds' poo, you'd have luck and in Puerto Rico they say the same, haha. So I guess, Francisco would have good luck, maybe he should buy a ticket for the lottery, lol!
The walking wasn't long. It lasted around 45min. But there were steps and floor was slippery, so you have to be careful. If the guide saw someone needed more time, he stopped and waited for him. All the people were happy and took lots of pics. I wasn't the only one, hehe.
Then we took the trolley up again. Took a couple of fun shots there and visited the gift shop. All the place is very nice, large parks at the entrance, all the trees and flowers... well, it was getting late and we had to think about where to have lunch - a traditional one! We asked our guide about the place we have been recommended at the entrance - by the owner haha. And he said his favorite restauranst nearby were: the place we have been recommended and his mom's house and since she didn't know about having visitors, better going to the restaurant, lol!

Camuy Caverns - Cavernas de Camuy
If you are in Puerto Rico, you shouldn't miss visiting the Camuy Caverns and enjoy the beauty of the nature and see how the Camuy river formed these amazing caverns.
They are located not far from San Juan, just about 45min driving. You have to pay a fee to enter, but this is not expensive and helps to keep this place well maintained. Once you pay, they will give you a ticket and you'd have to wait until they call your number.
Before starting the journey, you'd watch an informative video and they would give you some security equipment. After that you will board a trolley, which will drive you down to the cave. At this point a guide will join the group, who will be with you the whole time, explaining all about the caverns, flora and fauna. By the way the tour is available in Spanish or English.
After a short drive, surrounded by a nice greenery, you'd arrive to a station. This is next to the entrance to the caverns itself. Not only the stalactites and stalagmites inside the caves are amazing, how they light everything is great. Really did a great job. Also you'd be able to see waterfalls and get closer to the Camuy river. Just be careful what you touch. Touching the stalagmites is forbidden, but there are some places you can touch, but you might find a not so nice surpise (bat's poo).
But not only the caverns are great, the whole vegetation in the area is impressive. Although it doesn't last long, be sure to wear comfy shoes - better snickers since it's slippery.
The park offers you parking places, cafeteria, restrooms and is close to Lares where you can enjoy a delicious Puerto Rican meal.
Just one advise: try to arrive there early, so you won't have to wait long.
