ROMEO 23

I've been here for 2+ years now and everyday is a trip, an experience, a moment of growth. This is the center of Europe, everyone is passing through. Every nationality is represented, tourists or students, or people like me, calling the city our new home. Whether short term guests or long time stays everyone agrees: Prague is gorgeous. This blog is an attempt to convey that beauty-historically and visually.

Roman Týc, Sponsor: Irnerio Praha S.R.O., 2004

In 2004 The Cow Parade Prague, consisting of 218 life-sized fiberglass cow sculptures, graced the streets and parks of the city. Each cow was financed by a corporate or government sponsor and then decorated by selected local artists with the goal to boost business and tourism.

Walking, grazing and sometimes lying down, many of these colorful cows can still be found scattered across the landscape by ones or in small herds, although some have been illegally moved or vandalized.

During the night of June 8th, 2004 the “Romeo 23” cow, installed on Kinskych Square, next to the Trapdoor of Time Fountain, was so severely beaten that the next day it was found with holes in it. This memorable cow was clearly designed to evoke the Russian Tank No. 23 and definitely evoked the pain associated with Communism. The damaged cow was removed.

During the episode Týc stated that in a few days he had planned a public event involving painting Romeo 23 bright pink.
