We had a long relaxing day in front of us in Shigatse, the second city of Tibet. After a good breakfast we left with a taxi for the Tashilhunpo Monastery. Here resided the Panchen Lama . The monastery is a big place with lots of separate buildings. One of the most important ones is the Jamba Chyenmu (the Maitreya temple). Here houses a gigantic statue of Buddha (about 26 meters in height). It looks like gold but it also contains copper and brass. There are lots of courtyards en temples to look at. After wandering around for a few hours we decide to walk the Kora or Lingkhor around the Monastery. This is a path outside the monastery walls were lots of pilgrims walk and swing the hundreds of prayer wheels or mills. We enjoy this beautiful walk and the contact we make with the Tibetan people. We walk by the Dzong, this is a reconstruction of the original one and maybe because of that less impressive. Through the old part of town we go back to the entrance of the monastery. We pass a big market where all sort of things are for sale, but nothing we would want. So without buying anything we wander around. Early tomorrow we leave for Sakya, so we eat at the hotel and drink a beer at the bar before going to bed.
