We decided to visit the Drepung monastery situated at the foot of the Mountain Gambo Utse, 5 kilometers from the western suburb of Lhasa. We doubted if we again were going to rent some bikes or take the bus because it was somewhat further out of the city. We decided to take the bus which stopped in front of our hotel. Small busses make very short stops and shout out the name of the destination. We got into one of the busses hoping it really would go to Drepung.
At the foot of a hill the bus stopped and all the pilgrims we traveled with got out, a sign for us to do the same. Most of the Tibetan people got into a tractor-car, for a small amount these drive you up the hill to the entrance of the monastery. In one of the tractor-cars were two places left for us. The monastery Drepung is beautifully located. You have a great view over the surrounding mountains and down to the city and the river in the distance. It was a big complex of small streets up and down the hillside. We wandered around here for several hours. One monk told us to be at the main building at a certain time. From every side the monks gathered for a ceremony.
