Three amazing days diving on the Great Barrier Reef:

 

26th January


Dive 11. Saxon Reef.
No wetsuit, 4kg weight, surface interval +12, 13:40-14:15. Depth 14.8m, bottom-time 26'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Black sea cucumber, staghorn coral, brain coral, spagetti worms, knobby coral, clown fish and anemone.
Highlight - first unaccompanied dive.


Dive 12. Hastings Reef.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 2:30, 15:45-16:20. Depth 12.0m, bottom-time 33'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Humbug damsel, featherstar, threadfish butterfly, teardrop butterfly, bicolour angel, bluepath butterfly, bluelined surgeon, long-fin barfish and spangled emperor.


Dive 13. Hastings Reef.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 3:20, 19:40-20:10. Depth 7.4m, bottom-time 28'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Night dive.
Giant clam, chhristmas tree worm, sleeping parrotfish, humpback cleaner shrimp, banded cleaner shrimp, bioluminescence.
Highight - first night dive, seeing hundreds of red eyes from cleaner shrimp look out at me from the coral.


 

27th January


Dive 14. Hastings Reef.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 10:20, 06:30-07:05. Depth 13.2m, bottom-time 33'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Chocolate dip damsel, moonfish, parrotfish, potato co, harlegquin, turkfish wrasse, blue streak goy, sealfaced puffer, spotted boxfish.


Dive 15. Hastings Reef.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 3:40, 10:45-11:15. Depth 16.2m, bottom-time 28'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Pineapple sea cucumber, giant clam, needle coral, bluestreak cleaner wrasse, clown trigger fish, long-finned goby, schools of black-tailed fusiliers, napoleon maori wrasse


Dive 16. Saxon-Clippers.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 3:45, 15:00-15:35. Depth 10.2m, bottom-time 33'.

White-tipped reefshark


Dive 17. Saxon-Clippers.
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 3:45, 15:00-15:35. Depth 10.2m, bottom-time 33'.

Nightdive.

Highlights - Packs of Giant Travelli hunting by our torchlight, seeing a sleeping turtle.



28th January


Dive 18. Saxon-Clippers
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 10:40, 06:40-07:20. Depth 13.2m, bottom-time 39'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Highlights - Green sea turtle feeding


Dive 19. Saxon Reef (Twin Peaks)
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 1:25, 08:45-09:30. Depth 15.4m, bottom-time 31'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Banded humbug, painted flute moth, fox face rabbit fish,stripey, footballer cod, bird wrasse, tomato wrasse, gold-eulined spinefoot, long-finned batfish, three-barred porcupinefish, ridlip parrotfish, jewel damsels, boring clam, lion fish, black-tipped reef shark being cleaned, white-tipped reef shark hunting, barracuda.
Highlights - seeing a shark resting on the bottom for cleaning


Dive 20. Saxon Reef (Twin Peaks)
No wetsuit, 5kg weight, surface interval 1:10, 10:40-11:20. Depth 15.9m, bottom-time 35'.
Buddy - Lydia Makaroff
Banded humbug, painted flute moth, fox face rabbit fish,stripey, footballer cod, bird wrasse, tomato wrasse, gold-eulined spinefoot, long-finned batfish, three-barred porcupinefish, ridlip parrotfish, jewel damsels, boring clam, lion fish, black-tipped reef shark being cleaned, white-tipped reef shark hunting, barracuda.
Highlights - circling the twin peaks at different depths, seeing the segregation of corals and fish.

 

Total bottom time = 12:56

I'm not really into diving for the sake of diving, but if I am in a place with a beautiful reef I always take the opportunity to go under and see it. I would love to start underwater photography, but haven't had the time and money :)
