And finally… Chichaoua…

Chichaoua is the town where practically all the buses between Agadir and Marrakesh stop for lunch or supper… It has rows after rows of butcher shops where you order your meat straight off the cow and then take it over to be grilled right in front of you…

The town itself is a bit hidden—and since this is a good spot to catch an overnight bus back to Casa, I’m determined to find it.

Actually the town is broken up into several section. The first section—on the hillside to the left as you come from Essaouira, is a crowded, interesting neighbourhood with steep streets going up and down the hill… Every café has a couple thousand guys clustered around trying to get an eye on some football game going on—makes you wonder if anybody has their own TV set here in Chichaoua…

From here I continued on to the main traffic circle where a mini fair/expo is being help… I pay the 2 dirhams to enter just to see what’s going on…not much… but in a boring town like Chichaoua, I guess it’s a big deal… From here I continue on the highway towards Agadir down a very lonely stretch, late into the night… by the looks of it, I’ve left Chichaoua far behind… but I could swear that there’s more Chichaoua up ahead… Finally I reach the other section of town, which consists mainly of large houses being built for Chichaouan emigrants abroad… Still a lot of empty space—but I do finally find a sort of “Main Street” with businesses a large plaza and a beautiful mosque… From here I find another road that goes back to the Main Traffic Circle, where I finally decide to call it a day and catch a late night bus to Casablanca…

Thus ends my two day, 8 town lightning sub-tour of the Essaouira region… No breakthrough big discoveries—but a lot of memories brought back to life during these days…
