There’s an unofficial bush taxi heading up the road to Oulmes—so I hop on. And that’s when the real Ourika adventure begins.
The road follows a beautiful stream, snaking up the canyon—lined with cafes, tagine joints and just places where you sheets are laid out on the grass where you can just relax in the shade along the rushing stream. It’s obvious why this is the favourite escape for Marrakechis to come and get away from the dry, dusty heat in the valley. All along the way are picturesques villages along the steep slopes…
It’s good to see local folks benefiting from the weekend vacationers… Cafes and open air restaurants line both sides of the stream with scores of suspension footbridges crossing the stream—bringing back memories of mountains scenes of the Andes mountains in South America.
I can clearly see why Marrakechis love this place…
We reach Oulmes, a small village about 16 kms up the road. Here there are a couple of cheap hotels and this being a Saturday, I figure I’d better go ahead and book a room before things fill up.
Then head out to continue one up the road. This whole region is clearly a goldmine of beautiful parkbenchable towns… and there’s only one way to really soak it all in: on foot.
