Six months into my new Morocco life, I feel I’ve just got to take a break and try something different. I head south WAY south—overland all the way across the Sahara desert through Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to discover the joys and perils of playing street music in sub-Saharan Africa. Then I return to Morocco to discover another 100+ towns…

0311. End of the Aoufous tour (Mor 144--new)

The peaceful oasis road comes to an end and I'm forced to hike up along the narrow highway...

The scenery is stunning all the same--definitely a worthy hike. I only hope I'll be able to make it to the north end of the canyon before it gets dark.

Finally I reach a touristy little lodge and buy an overpriced bottle of water.  I'm half tempted to stay the night here--but decide against it.

Soon I reach the peaceful little village of Walid Chekker.  Famished, I grab a bunch of packaged cookies... They could really use a little restaurant along this highway somewhere.

A couple fellows call for a song... so I play for the Walid Chekker crowd as dusk sets in...

As we wait beside the highway for a grand taxi heading to Errachidia, we talk about what life is like for young folks here in the Aoufous valley.  No cybercafe.  No high school--a real challenge for anyone who wants to pursue an education... But they seem like a cheerful, wholesome bunch...

It's been quite a hike... But worth it.  I have definitely done the Aoufous Canyon justice.  And now I'm ready to get some rest...
