Six months into my new Morocco life, I feel I’ve just got to take a break and try something different. I head south WAY south—overland all the way across the Sahara desert through Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to discover the joys and perils of playing street music in sub-Saharan Africa. Then I return to Morocco to discover another 100+ towns…

0308. Hiking the Aoufous Canyon (Mor 141--new)

I decided to head on up to Arfoud for the night.

Unfortunately, with the king coming soon to tour the region, my hotel was booked up with Gendarme and military personnel.  I found another one that was a bit more expensive--I figured I should go ahead and take it--as any other hotels up the road will probably be in the same situation.

Next morning, I know exactly where to go--to explore the grand Aoufous Canyon that I saw on my way down from Errachidia... So I quickly catch a G taxi heading that way...

First stop:  The town of Aoufous itself.  Basically a couple of shops and houses lining the highway.  One block to the right are the cliffs.  One block to the left, the lush oasis...

I continue on foot--meet a jolly group of guys who ask me for a song... in exchange they offer to give me a short tour of the first castle up the road.  I quickly discover the advantage of having a guided tour--instead of coming to the end at the other side... we simply went into sombody's house and...voila! out the back door and out of the city!
