0270. Hangin' out at the pool hall (Mor 103--new)

Six months into my new Morocco life, I feel I’ve just got to take a break and try something different. I head south WAY south—overland all the way across the Sahara desert through Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to discover the joys and perils of playing street music in sub-Saharan Africa. Then I return to Morocco to discover another 100+ towns…

0270. Hangin' out at the pool hall (Mor 103--new)

Chemaia has a bit more substance to it that Sooq Khemis, so I take my time wandering all the way to the south end and back again... often followed around by a small troop of kids providing me with entertainment...

There's a small, dirty little park where I figure I could parkbench--but I figure I'll keep going to see if I can find anything better.  A couple of fellows hanging outside a pool hall hollers for me to come over and play some music.  I told them that I couldn't compete with the loud music being played in the pool hall... one of them promptly went inside and told them to shut the music off... Then they invited me inside to play for the whole gang...

Was having a good time there with the Chemaia fellows--but I was getting hungry.

One of the fellows seemed to read my mind "come over to my place for lunch" he insisted.

I hopped on the back of his scooter and we headed over to his place, where he lives with his mother, younger sister and an elderly uncle.  He proudly shows me a video he recorded on his camcorder of a recent protest held here in Chemaia against the Isreali attack on Gaza.  It's quite an impressive sight to see all the folks of Chemaia out on the streets together.

"Did you guys get any media coverage?" I asked.

"No--it's just something people needed to do--folks had so much emotions stirred up and they needed a way to let it out..."

After lunch we went outside to find a good spot to take a video clip--but it was starting to rain, so I had to cut my session short.  My host had a date with a girl, so I figured it was time to head on my way...

Good folks live in quiet little Chemaia...
