Six months into my new Morocco life, I feel I’ve just got to take a break and try something different. I head south WAY south—overland all the way across the Sahara desert through Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to discover the joys and perils of playing street music in sub-Saharan Africa. Then I return to Morocco to discover another 100+ towns…

0267. The Bouguedra Football Team (Mor 100--new)

For such a big city, Safi seems to be seriously lacking in transportation with nearby towns and villages... I couldn't find hardly any taxis or buses heading to the villages on my map.  Finally I hooked up with a taxi going to Sidi Bouguedra...

Bouguedra really has very little substance--but it does have park benches!  So sat down and pulled out my guitar... Soon had company--a couple of rather rough looking fellows hung around and afterwards I insisted that i come over for tea to one of their homes--so we all went over there... I asked if it was a problem with the family to have so many people show up

"Oh, everybody in this town is related to each other, so it's not a problem."

Afterwards we went for a little hike in the countryside.  The nearby grain elevator, they claim is the second biggest in Africa... doesn't look too big to me though...

These fellows are also all members of Bouguedra's football team...

Nice group of guys, I'd have to say...
