Arrive Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

This turned out to be a great trip to Las Vegas! My gambling skills (if you want to count pushing the buttons on slot machines as 'skill') put me $500 ahead. Not bad for a $20 investment, huh?! We had a great time touring the Grand Canyon, visiting a couple of the spas in Vegas and made friends with several Las Vegas 'locals' as well as Marga from Cape Town, South Africa. The weather was fantastic and my winnings made it that much more fun. Be sure to read my other blog on Las Vegas!

Arrive Las Vegas, Nevada

Welcome to Las Vegas!

Depending on which concourse you arrive at in Las Vegas, it's relatively easy to get from the gate to the baggage claim and ground transportation areas.  I can offer some advice here - if you've checked bags with your airline - DON'T RUSH to get there.  For some reason it always takes forever at the baggage claim in Vegas.  Delta and Southwest Airlines are average for delivery time of bags to the carousel.  If you're flying ValueTran (aka "Critter" or more commonly know as AirTran), you might as well go grab a soda or something to eat because they take forever to deliver your bags to the carousel no matter what airport you're at.  And in Vegas it just seems to be the worst location for them.

Getting to your hotel/casino or other lodging facility is easy.  There are tons of cabs and limos waiting outside as well as buses that take groups to various hotels and properties all over Las Vegas.  Check to see if your hotel or casino has it's own shuttle while you're waiting for your bags - chances are they do.  If you're headed to North Las Vegas, Henderson or Summerlin that's further out in the 'burbs, I suggest you probably go with the cab option.  It's more expensive but also more direct and faster.  Airport shuttle buses like BellTrans or others only service hotels and casinos on the strip (Las Vegas Boulevard).

BellTrans is a great transportation alternative when visiting Vegas and your hotel doesn't offer a complimentary shuttle. Most do not. And being the cheap guy that I am, I also prefer to not pay the cab rates in Vegas or pay daily parking fees at my hotel for a rental car I'm probably not going to use while there anyway! Vegas is a pedestrian city with all the big casinos within walking distance of each other.

The buses pick up outside the baggage claim area. Just go to the window of the small building outside and tell the agent where you're headed. I always purchase a round trip ticket. They'll direct you to one of several vans or mini-buses waiting. You'll be riding with other passengers to various properties along the way so depending on where your hotel is, it could be a short ride or a long one, however, this is the cheapest option for getting to your hotel from the airport.

Clean buses and vans with mostly friendly drivers. Have only come across one jerk in the six times I've used them. Most are very nice. Be sure to tip as it's not included in the fare.
