The Family vacation to Pine Ridge

My better half and our son are LaKota Sioux so, having family in South Dakota inspired us to make the 18 hour drive to go stay with Grandpa RedBear. We stayed one night in Sheridan Wo. at a Super 8 that had nice accomadations and was pretty cheap($75). That included pool, sauna, hot tub, and a great continentel breakfast in the morning. We ended up staying there on our way back to Idaho as well.
We stayed outside of a town called Allen, and it really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. I think it's because you have to drive through the bad lands, then onto a lot of dirt roads. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on the coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation, in a cabin without electricity or running water. We stayed with my sweeties dad and he was a great host. The wheather was so mild compared to the harsh, snowy area we live in.
The trip from his house to the Crazy Horse Monument was a fair jaunt, which we broke up with a stop in an all you can eat buffet in Rapid City. The kids loves it! They had never been to a place like that. On to the monument. We got to get in for free since half the family in the mini-van is Native to the area. As you drive up the steep road toward the monument, you can't believe the size of the rock it's carved into. Going in the off season is the way to go because there was hardly anyone there. The museum is filled with history of the area, photo's of my honey's family, (he's from a great line of cheifs), a nice gift shop, and an incredible movie that is shown every 20 minitutes or so.
Wow, is about all I can say about the story behind this amazing monument! I don't want to tell the story behind it because it is one I feel is experienced first hand. Find the amazement for yourself. We had such an amazing time exploring the Bad Lands and the surrounding area; we ended up saving Wounded Knee for the next time we go visit. My advise is make sure you see Mount Rushmore first- if you are into that kind of thing. We were so dissapointed after the outstanding sight of Crazy Horse, no one even wanted to get out. It was small and stood for things we didn't care about anyway.
