The drive was brutal - 8 days, plus 4 hours of driving, just me and three dogs. I drove through Alabama, a small part of Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington - finally ending up in Canada! I drove through deserts, over mountains, through mountains, and even hill country. I freaked out in texas hill country (I'm afraid of heights) and drove over a California mountain right after someone drove off of it. I drove through the high Mojave desert, which is truly deserted, only to have to drive down mountains in fog so thick I couldn't even see the full hood of my car.
But all ended okay. The guard finally let me through, after humiliating me in front of a building full of people. Asshole. And I did get to see some beautiful parts of this country. New Mexico is stunning and I got to cross the Continental Divide. Arizona brought me some much needed warmth. I drove through a town called "Bigfoot, CA" - and yes, there were bigfoot statues everywhere. Seeing the California coast is always a sight to behold. The Oregon coast is the most stunning coastline I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few in my day. And my dogs were actually pretty well behaved for most of the trip. And, bonus, I stopped by and saw my friend Woodie in Tacoma before driving across to BC.
How is it here in BC? Well, the yurt I'm renting is pretty cool. I have a huge, foresty back yard. And I discovered today that I can walk to the beach through these back paths, which is awesome. Today was the first sunny day since I got here, so I finally got to see mountains past the shoreline, which is gorgeous. Everyone has dogs here and the coffee is fantastic. Plus, the local vancouver station is amazing! It's like listening to my ipod, with songs I hadn't heard of yet - they've been playing city and colour, vampire weekend, ben lee, tegan and sara, eddie vedder, jack johnson, and a bunch of really good canadian artists. I start work tomorrow but went there this past Thursday and everyone seems pretty cool. Hopefully things will go well.
