Seemed to wake up at 9 most mornings so went down for some breakfast complete with laptop just to do a final check before the road trip started. Oliver came down to the restaurant and said he'd spoken with Handra who would pick us up at 11. Went to the room to get stuff ready to go and met Handra down at reception. Oliver was running late and after settling his bar bill we were having a general chat to the guy behind reception and made temporary reservations that we would head back to Mastapa Gardens (the name of the place) on the 28th which was perfect timing for me to get to the airport for the 29th.
Our first stop on the tour was a little secluded town where there was a monkey forest. It was nothing like Kuta so it was a refreshing change not be a buzzing town.
We were able to feed the monkeys with bananas, I decided not to but Oliver did. It was 15,000 alone to get into the forest and this is where I was budgeting. Very glad I didn't get the bananas as the monkeys knew exactly which people had them even when we were trying to hide them. They were climbing up his leg. Took loads of photos, they were all so still and so used to humans. Although one of them was really cheeky and ended up nicking all of them and as soon as Oliver started to run after him the little bu*ger ran off! They know the exact tricks of the trade! One jumped on to my back and started rifling through my bag. When Handra tried to scare him off he tried to attack Handra then bit me - thankfully didn't break the skin. If my parents found that out they would have actually freaked out.
We went to one of the highest points in Bali
and it seemed to take forever up this long and winding road through villages. It was so nice to see the non touristy parts where people will just sell bits and pieces like snacks etc outside their house. The highest point of Bali was amazing, got some cracking pictures.
Handra wanted to go and visit his family and introduce us to them. I couldn’t believe how many family members were round one table and Handra’s uncle was getting married tomorrow for which we were invited. We had a drink with all of them and sat for a while talking. Think they must have been wondering why a European girl would be with Handra so think their suspicions were raised! On the way out we saw a pig lying down in a cage where he could not move whatsoever.
Found out that he was going to be sacrificed for the wedding tomorrow. We had to find a cash point so that I could get some money for dinner and we found ourselves a lovely place right on the beach so we could watch the sunset. It was quite a pricey restaurant in comparison to what I was used to. I had chicken fried rice which I knew I was fine with and they did it so differently in Bali, the rice had a kick to it and they put an egg on top with crackers on the side. Was quite nice actually, I’m just not used to spicy foods. Yes I know that is what travelling around Asia/Indonesia is all about! We stopped at a busier part of town as we had to get some sarongs ready for the next day and the wedding. Oliver and Handra got themselves kitted out with some smart outfits.
One of the shy ones who covered up!
I opted for one of my sarongs and made it into a dress and put a flower in my hair. We also stopped at a place where we could get a freshly made ice shake. Saw them crush the ice from a big block of ice with a this old fashioned crusher! I had a watermelon and pineapple shake thing and it was lovely!!
We were staying at some lovely bungalows which were owned by a friend of Handra and they were right in the middle of nowhere but overlooked the ocean. I got my own room, I didn’t know these guys from Adam so I wasn’t going to share a room with them. Handra and Oliver shared their room. I jumped in the pool as soon as it was possible. The owners came out with some drinks that Oliver and Handra had prepared, they did not look great at all. Guess the only way to describe it was it was supposed to look like a cocktail but it smelt really bad.
I decided to pass on the drink and my gut instinct was right, they had put magic mushrooms in. They weren’t even going to tell me – so this is where my trusting of these guys started to spiral downhill from here. I uploaded my photos from the day ready to start a fresh for tomorrow and chilled out a bit with some music in this little hut next to the pool then decided to go to bed early. Got woken up at 2.30 by Handra, the mushrooms had clearly kicked in as he wanted to stay in my room. I told him no and when I went back to bed he sat out on the porch and did hear him go finally. After that I was apprehensive about the next day but managed to get to sleep.
