From Caen, you have to take a train to Pontorson. From this town you'll have to take a bus or taxi just outside the train station, in order to get to the mount entrance. Take in mind that the bus schedule doesn't match the train ones, so you have to wait for a while. The first thing that you will realize is that nothing is allowed to be build about 1km from the mount, you will only see grassy plains and lambs, this last have right of way, so if they decide to cross the road before the bus, you might be waiting for a while.

When you finally arrive to the gates you begin to feel the magnificence of the place. Most of the tourists walk by the main lane, which is full of stores and restaurants, to the entrance of the abbey. My advice, if you don't want to be overwhelmed by the crowd, take a left in the first alleyway that you find. You will find hostels, other buildings and the old abbey cementery. If you get a sense that you are lost, as long as you keep walking upward, you're on the right track.

You will start your visit in the top most building, the church, and if you are lucky you could attend mass with the monks. From the atrium the view is unique, the vast extention around you and the sight of the sea far away from the mount is impresive, specially when you see the place that reaches the tide every afternoon.

From the church you make your way down thru the maze of rooms and finish you tour at the gardens. Now you are ready to have lunch and buy your souvenirs.

Finally take some time to walk around the ramparts and on the flood plains.
