I went to St. Croix on business during the first week of December. The weather was awesome, low80s (F) all week. Unfortunately I had to work most of the daylight hours and did not get to explore that much. I would not recommend driving at night beacuse of the poor unlit roads. I stayed at the Carambola Resort which was great. There was a mountain I had to drive over everyday to get to work which the nicknamed "The Beast" because of its being extreme grade and it is part of the ironman races.
On Saturday morning I was awaked by some guys partying very loudly downstairs from me. I knew I would not get back to sleep so I through on some clothes grabbed a flashlight and hiked the nearby nature trail. It was still dark when I started and I was a little nervous until I realized there very few insects and I had plenty of trees to hang onto while climbing the steep trail.
The only wild life I saw was some very interesting termite nests and a couple of hermit crabs. One of the nests had two hermit crabs digging in to get some breakfast.
I reached the top of the hill and could see how high I had climbed. There was a lite rain and warm breeze (very nice). I only stopped at the top because the path was covered by saw grass which made me think of the poisonous centipedes.
On the way back to the airport. I stopped at the Cruzan Rum Distillery. For $4 you get to tour the facility and get as many samples as you wish to try. If only I wasn't driving!
I will definately go back to St. Croix for a vacation!
Some of my pictures are low quality because I had to resort to uing my cell phone (forgot my camera charger!)
