Oh my goshhhhhhhh I am in Rome!!! This place is amazing. When I arrived to the airport my driver from the hotel was waiting for me with a little sign that said Plata, very exciting!!!!!! He spoke no English or Spanish and my Italian is very broken, but we understood each other quite well. I was very surprised when I noticed that the car was a Mercedes-Benz (sp??) but then I started noticing that even some of the buses are also MB. While we were talking, or trying to, he told me that his daughter is currently living in Cartagena (where I was born). What a coincidence!!! People drive crazy here!!! I am so used to everyone (or almost everyone) following the signals in the US, it makes me dizzy!
The hotel where I spent the first night, Hotel Della Torre Argentina, is amazing! I have the best view of Rome from my room. I was not able to turn on the lights in the room so I had to call the front desk (very embarrasing!) and it turns out that I had to stick my key card inside this hole in the wall and all of the lights would automatically turn on. I thought this was funny!
I decided to get lost on the first day. No map, nothing. Just follow people around. I went to Piazza Farnese and they had some sort of festival or something because apparently they are going to have elections very soon. I bought a slice of Pizza and a bottle of water and sat there for a little bit and just watched people walk. Then I walked a bit more and ended up in the Pantheon. I didn't know what it was at the beginning because I went straight inside and took some pictures of the beautiful church, but then when I went outside I saw the huge columns made out of marmol (I think) and the dome and I was so excited!! I took lots of pictures (coming soon) and just sat in the fontana by the obelisque for about 4 hours and watched the tourists and locals walk by. I tasted Italian gelato for the first time (tiramisu and blackberry) and it was soooooo good!!! I think I am going to eat gelato every day I am here!!
