South Rim...the "real" Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

During my first year at UCLA I took a geology course that dealt with how the various national parks were formed. It was field-trip intensive, meaning we went all over the Western US to revel at...rocks.

South Rim...the "real" Grand Canyon

Obviously one can't just drive down into the canyon and back up the other side to reach South Rim, so getting from Bright Angel to that is practically a day's drive in and of itself, literally driving around the Grand Canyon.  We stopped for lunch in the middle of nowhere and played in the Colorado River for a while, which was a lot colder than we expected.

We reached our campsite just before dusk, where we were able to sit at a look-out point and ponder our intense hike for the next day.  We watched the sun go down over the canyon, and the crowd that was there literally cheered.
