bored on the train
So i left the u.s. on christmas day, not such a bad day to fly overseas. i luckily had a nice person sitting next to me that liked to talk, but not too much; in other words, the perfect fellow passenger. i found myself in munich tired and aimlessly wandering until i found the train station. munich is, by the way, a really nice airport just like most people say. i took the train from munich to salzburg which was a nice calm train ride. not much scenery until you get closer to salzburg but still a nice ride. i spent a lot of time in salzburg just taking it easy and relaxing seeing as it was my vacation between what will amount to be 2 very stressful semesters at university. i got to go snowboarding near hintersee, at werfenweng and also at altenmarkt.
getting excited for mountains!
the place near hinterse was nice but not too big. there were nice runs that could keep one busy for a few hours. snowboarding on new year's eve was a great way to spend the last day of the year. i spent new year's in the old town of salzburg watching the fireworks over the fortress. it was probably one of the most fun new year's i've ever had. werfenweng is larger and one could spend a whole day exploring the different runs. definitely a great place to go because the scenery is amazing. altenmarkt was also a place a bit on the smaller side but quite a few runs for exploring. i'll always have a place in my heart for altenmarkt though. some friends and i walked halfway up the mountain close to sunset and sat at the mountain hut drinking, eating and catching up. if you ever find yourself in the alps skiing, it is necessary to drinnk schnapps! well, after all that drinking and eating we didn't really want to walk down; so we sled. one of the most fun things i've ever done! it was also a little nerve wracking since it was dark and there were a few lights up here and there and also because of the fact that the whole run was ice; there hadn't been any fresh snow in weeks. well, after a 10 minute ride down the mountain and obtaining a bruise the size of a softball on my thigh, we had survived so we celebrated with some more beer and schnapps at the bottom! after spending another day in altenmarkt snowboarding it was back to salzburg. i spent my last day in salzburg touring the stiegl brewery. it's not so much a brewery tour as it is a stiegl history lesson. it's really informative on how beer is made and how stiegl has changed over the years. the best part is the free samples at the end. they also give a coupon for a free gift which is either a small glass or some free beer
after leaving salzburg it was on to vienna. i spent a lot of time in vienna going to different museums. i visited the schatzkammer, sisi/imperial apartments museum, haus der musik, kunsthistorisches, naturhistorisches, mumok, albertina, armour museum, and the da vinci exhibit. all were very worthwhile except for the da vinci exhibit. it was a little bit of a let down but it's also only a temporary exhibition in vienna. i also spent quite a bit of time walking around vienna just exploring and having a good time. i also stopped at many bakeries in search of the perfect sacher torte. of course the original is good. i tried the cake from demel and it was a bit of a letdown. it was too dry since they don't put layers of the apricot in the cake. i also tried the sacher torte from aida; it was pretty decent but was lacking a bit in flavor. i also went to a place called oberlaa. there is one near the outer ring and also one at naschmarkt. i went there the first time and tried the chocolate mousse torte. some of the best cake ever, not too sweet or sugary but just rich enough to make you want more. i ended up going back a few days later to try the sacher torte. honestly, the best piece i've ever had. the flavor was balanced all around and it wasn't too dry. after spending my days going to museums, eating out and exploring i went to loipersdorf therme to do some relaxing. i spent the day chilling out in 36f pools inside and outside and getting a massage. the perfect way to end a great trip!
