Green Bay is fortunate to be one of only four ports in the Midwest which hosts the Tall Ship Challenge. Bay City, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois are the other three Midwestern ports. The Tall Ships Great Lakes Challenge alternates yearly between races in the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Great Lakes.
In July of 2006 thirteen schooners tied to our port and a four-day festival ensued attracting about 70,000 from about 17 states. Rumor has it that a large percent of visitors drove up from Chicago as the ships are so crowded in their harbor that touring the schooners or riding on them became improbable, so they came here instead to get up close and personal with the crews and the ships.
It was a blazing 97 degrees that weekend, but even my Father, who was wheelchair bound at the time, wouldn't miss this opportunity.
Seeing these beautiful ships with masts unfurled leaves quite an impression ~ not to be missed!
During the 2006 Tour, here are the ships that anchored:
S/V Denis Sullivan
Friends Good Will
US Brig Niagra
Pride of Baltimore II
