We started our trip in Amsterdam in may 2008 and left for a short flight from Schiphol Amsterdam to Paris Charles de Gaulle, France. After a short stop and meeting our fellow travelers we got on to our plane that took us in 10.5 hours to the OR Tambo International Airport, of Johannesburg, South Africa. Arriving here it was cold, about 9 degrees Celcius. We didin't came to south africa for that cold weather. But an hour later when we did our first stop in Pretoria the temperature was already a comfy 17 degrees celcius and rising. We stopt at the 'voortrekkersmonument' from Pretoria a pretty historic place with a lot of history.
The Voortrekker Monument is a monument situated in the city of Pretoria, South Africa.
From here we went for a lunch (hamburger and beer). Well it seems hamburgers are the same all over the world even in Africa big and teasy!!! In the meanwhile the sun was warming us up to a good 21 degrees celcius. After visiting some nice landmarks we arrived at our hotel in Pretoria. The part of the city the hotel was in was not the best part, the advise from our tourleader was not to leave the hotel after sunset. So we didn't!! We had a good meal, a couple of beers and went to bed!!!
The days following we, stayed at Ohrigstad, Pilgremsrest and krugerpark. We stayed a full 2 days in krugerpark and slept at KNP Skukuza. A gaming lodge in the middle of krugerpark. It was really nice, with a nice swimmingpool and a campstore. Every lodge had it's own 'braai' (BBQ) We just used it to make a fire too warm up because it gets cold at night.
The Gamedrive we had in Kruger was really great, we were already there at 6 o clock in the morning and brrrr it was freesing, good i brought a jacket too wear.
From South Africa we went for 2 days into the Kongdom of Swaziland right next door.
(INFO - Wikipedia)
The Kingdom of Swaziland is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered to the north, south, and west by South Africa, and to the east by Mozambique. The nation, as well as its people, are named after the 19th century king Mswati II.
After a short custom check we went to the main capital called Mbabane. We really had nice hotel here called the Logogo sun hotel (see review!). We left the Swaziland in the south and arrived in the province of Kwazhulu Nathal. Were we stopped at the Hluhluwe Wildpark reserve. Here we had another gamedrive. From here we went to the St Lucia a nice backpackers town at the coast of South Africa, in summer lots of tourist visit this place. In St Lucia we took a boat trip down the river and wachted the crocs laying at the shore of the river. Also a large number of hippos were in the water. They are even more dangoures than a crocodille. The kill al lot of people avery year in Africa.
After staying in a nice hotel in St'lucia we drove back north towards the 'drakensgebergte' after stopping for 1 night in Durban a middle large city at the coast of South Africa. We didn't liked it at all!! The same advise here not leave your hotel at night. De good thing was we visited a nice see aquarium in the city centre.
The last day of our trip we drove back towards johannesburg. Before we went to the airport we stopped for a couple of hours at the Nelson mandela chopping mall. It was a really big mall at the edge of the city. To bad the stores closed pretty early ( at 6) and the bus picked us up at 8, to go to the airport. So what else to do than drink BEER!!! Arriving at the airport everything went pretty fast untill in the plane. The guy which controlls the walkingbridge to the plane smached the left engine of the plane, which resulted in a 25 hour delay!! See our review about it!!! They had to fly in a KLM plane from Amsterdam to take us home.
So 25 hours later we arrived with KLM at Amsterdam airport!! It was a great holiday and saw a lot of cool things, but Africe will never be our top 1 holiday destination.
South Africa was a great country to get up and close with wildlife. Stay out of the city's because each day you spend time in them you miss the extraordinary nature of South Africa and second the citys are pretty dangerous also so watch out were you going at night. HAVE FUN!!!!
