We were making good time down from Calistoga so we stopped briefly so I could show Brett the Coppola property and the house that Francis calls home periodically (or so they say on the wine tour..ha ha). He bought the old Inglenook winery which came with this historic house on the property which they say he stays in some of the time when in town.
After stopping by Niebaum Lane, we headed across the way to Peju. I believe we arrived about 45 minutes before closing. The property was gorgeous and very artsy. My kind of place, but probably not Brett's. HAHA. We wandered around a bit and saw several different tasting bars and it seemed like different things were going on but we spoke with someone and she said all the tasting bars were the same, just spread out to give people a different experience.
She walked us over to one of the bars which was the least crowded and talked to a really nice guy running the bar. There was a large group of people next to us who I believe were all techy people out on a business trip and pretty wasted from what I remember. LOL. We tried all the wines on the tasting menu and Brett managed to sweet talk the guy into letting us try a couple other wines not on the regular menu. We ended up loving the Cabernet Franc which he also let us try the reserve of but we liked the regular release better. We ended up getting a couple bottles as the tasting fee was refunded then and started to head out when I spotted their collection of books. OMG the had the Stinking Rose Cookbook that is no longer available from the restaurant (at least not last time I was there).
We got back outside and in the car - not realizing it was 20 minutes after they closed! Oooops! We headed back to our hotel and decided we wanted something quick to eat since we had another early day. We had an appointment at 10am at Nickel and Nickel which is somewhere I've been dying to check out - one of the most recognized vineyards in Napa. We drove around downtown Napa looking for this Tapas place but found the Downtown Joe's Pub where's I've been for and I knew Brett wanted to check them out.
We decided to order a couple appetizers and split a burger and each had a beer. Quite a contrast from our high end wine tasting and fancy cheeses we had earlier! LOL But the food at Downtown Joe's is good and we enjoyed our buffalo wings, garlic fries, and cheeseburger. While we were sitting there eating, the homeless guy was being arrested outside. Brett started feeling bad for him, because he felt we were the reason the police got called and I tried to assure him that no matter what, someone would've called the police - they have zero tolerance for that in Napa.
After enjoying a wonderful dinner, we headed back to our hotel to take advantage of our great tub and finish off the wine we opened the night before. :D And of course, another early night to bed so we could be up and get everything packed and to Nickel and Nickel in time for our tour and tasting!
