Lanzhou Beef Noodle was a bit different but not distinguishingly remarkable compared to the similar Lanzhou beef noodles i had elsewhere. So nothing spectacular. What i did for the day was to check in few hours in the hotel and bathe myself in the hostel (finally), and get myself a inner pant layer for better thermal protection.
The day greatest gift was, the marvelous dream came true for my maiden Qinghai-Tibet Express train journey later in the afternoon at 3:20pm!
Qinghai-Tibet Express Train, in short 青藏铁路 is the world highest railway ever built. I still remembered back in 2005 when I first landed myself in Shanghai, it was all over the news on the inaugural ceremony of the opening of the railway express track. Wow, time flies. It is one of human greatest feat to be able to cut through the most tortuous mountainous and high altitude regions.
I finally splurged myself again in luxury by awarding myself a lower berth, soft bed ticket for my journey to Lhasa. I have to express my thanks to the young chap who works in Lanzhou youth hostel for getting the ticket in advance for me while I was travelling in Dunhuang.
Furthermore, my Tibet entry permit was not out then, which will render any of my early attempt to buy futile. He was so worried that I will not return to get the ticket as he had topped up additional 300rmb for my soft bed ticket. Blame myself for too trusting the web train price too much. I thought it was 657rmb but it turned out the ticket price is 850rmb afterall. I gave the chap the remaining 50rmb as tips for buying for me. It did save me a lot of worry for buying in advance.
The most memorable of all, was that I got to enjoy the entire 4-people compartment all by myself. So much for the luxury on a soft-bed train ride, I got myself an entire compartment too. It was money so well-spent I thought =_)
The entire train ride requires 28hours, and it will stop by few stations before finally reaching Lhasa as its final destination!
