Based on my regular Xi'an train schedule guide (in Chinese) tool, it was marvelous that there's a overnight train from Xi'an to Lanzhou leaving 2226 and arriving next day 0638, for a total of 676km over 8hrs of ride.
It was already beyond noon time when i got my train ticket, which did set my mind at ease for the moment.
My next agenda was to look for travel agencies that could give me more insights to my tentative Tibet trip. Because of that, I went on to locate the travel agency, which brought me on the day tour the previous day. It was disappointing though as the area has no other travel agencies as mentioned by the tour guide! On the better side, i was all-positive that I would be able to travel to Tibet, that I also started stocking some med I could consume to prepare for the high-altitude in Tibet,as well as,the usual paracetomol for headaches and flu for my subsequent days.
Another good thing is I have travelled out of the inner walled city, to the sub-urban zones, which subsequently led me back to the Main East Door. It was an idle stroll up on the city wall, where it took me another 1.5hrs to walk from East to the South Main Door! I was in fact trying to head to the stretch of tour agencies nearby South Main Door to enquiry more on my Tibet & Dunhuang trip, but due to my obvious misjudgement of the wall-walk distance, i was too tired & hungry to proceed on.
Time just whizzed off, and all I know it was time to head back hostel to collect my backpack and make my final enquiries on Tibet trip offer from the Inn. In fact I was pretty stunned when I saw the pricing for the various Tibet packages. For the same say 6days package, the price can range from 4k to 10k rmb just by varying the group size of 8 to 1 ! Arggh. That's super bad news for me as I'm travelling alone! And to make the matter worse, I am a foreign-passport holder which means I need a travel agency to bind me with an itinenary before I can get my Tibet entry permit too.....!
So when I left the Inn heading to the train station, my mind was shrouded with what-I-must-do once in Lanzhou, with further enquiring on Tibet trip again. I told the Inn staff I need to reconsider, depending on situation in Lanzhou, if not, I will give them the confirmation once i'm there in Lanzhou.
In order to cut the cost. the best idea in fact is to by pass tour agency & go free & easy which I could not since I'm a foreign-passport holder. Stu[id red-tape again. So what I did was to get a 6days only-Lhasa city tour, with 2 days of hotel extension. My mind was actually thinking of going Lhasa and let the local tour guide to assist me for my outside-Lhasa trips. I think this formula will work well. Better than going through so many hands right!
