Silkroad D1: Xi'an - Ancient Capital City Day
December 26, 2008
The shuttle bus took around 45minutes before finally reaching the bustling inner-walled city of Xi'an.
My first immediate response when I disembarked was WOW - this ancient city is buzzing with such modern life and aura! It greeted me with such a good feeling, that it can really be placed on par with that of Beijing. The central Bell & Drums tower pivoted at roads intersection, my first sight of attraction, mesmerized me for that second.
Lugged with my 80litres backpack & light bag, I orientated myself as I dawdled to my hostel - Han Tang Youth Hostel, which was around 10-15 minutes walk ( guessed i was really enjoying the sights that were greeting me despite my bag burdens and snapping photos delightfully along the route)
Upon checking into my dormitory, I was greeted by an amiable man in his late fifties, which i mistook him for the room cleaner. Ah after holding a short conversation with him did i discovered that he had been in Xian for the past few weeks! He has retired and am shuttling between city hostels and holidaying. No wonder his barang-barang with him is that much!

Silkroad D1: Xi'an - Ancient Capital City Night
December 26, 2008
After settling down in the hostel and making enquiries for tomorrow itinenary, it was already near evening.
Without further ado, i started exploring the later half of the day trying out the city public transportations and city attractions nearby.
Watson is just few walking steps away. I managed to buy my basic necessities like shampoo & shoe soles. My first dinner meal was cheap at 4RMB ! A Bowl of red bean porridge with egg rolls.
Another few walking steps, I'm into the famous Muslim food street. Goodness! The plentitude array of food snacks were too tempting. No wonder even my local colleagues in Shanghai always praised about Xi'an snacks. Even their 烧烤 barbecued stuff or even hawker hamburger 汉堡 is so different from those you can grab in Shanghai.
There was even pipping hot sugar cane juice! One word - yummy.
I was recommended by Hantang Inn staff to catch the water fountain show in Big Wild Goose Pagoda. I was too immersed with the food streets that i nearly missed the show! I reached ard 8:20pm and think i only catch the last few minutes of the fountain display. Alas. But nevertheless, I ended the night with a good walk around the Big Goose Pagoda area and a good rest in the KFC for a hot drink. Hah. And I obediently took a local bus back to hostel. It was a loong wait though.
Highlights of the Day:
1. Xian City Drum Tower & Nearby Muslim Quarters
2. Xian City Central Bell Tower
3. City of God Temple, Cheng Huang Miao
4. Big Wild Goose Pagoda - 8pm Night Fountain
Cost of the Day
1 Dinner & Snacks at Muslim Quarters ,Pagoda Square - 31rmb
2.Cab Transportatoin + Bus - 14rmb
3.Hostel Stay for the next 2 nights - 60rmb

Muslim Food Restaurant, the name means literally "One-cent worth of profit". Goodwill of owner for the benefit of the mass.

Plentitude of Xi'an Food Snacks at one Go !
I believe any tourist who have been to Xi'an will never miss this famous Muslim Food street, where one can find the food snacks you are craving for.
Not to mention that Xi'an is long famous for its delightful array of food snacks which has its history as early as 1000 years ago!
In fact all my dinner treats were at Muslim streets, as i just like returning to try different kind of food there. Even its mutton sticks, barbecued stuffs are so different from other parts of China I've tried.
Some of the very famous food that you shoud try is
Yang Ruo Pao Mo - The famous stall is Lao Shun Jia located in there
Ruo Jia Mo - Meat Stuffed in Wheat Buns
Hamburger - Unique assorted-style of food jumbled up to replace the meat
Parsimmon Pie/Cake
Dumplings in Spicy Sour Soup (Suan Tang Jiao)
And a whole lot of other food, cakes and desserts!
Not to mention, it is cheap since the stalls are mostly catered to the locals. Do not expect posh restaurants there, but some plain, clean stretch of stalls with benches. Oh,do expect a lot of mutton and beef. Definitely no pork here.
What about your fascination here? =)

Pleasant & Homely Stay in Xian with excellent staff service that gives it a magical touch
My honest review after staying for across various youth hostels in China.
Han Tang Inn has given me a very pleasant & homely stay during my short 3 days backpack in Xian. Or I should humbly said it was ranked on my top choice of my youth hostel-stays so far. To me, what i needed most for a cheap accomodation is not about luxury, but the comfy bed that give you a good nap, locker to put your mind at ease for your huge haversack and a clean, tidy place for your shower bath. The value-added that comes in would be the throng of travellers to interact freely & the accessibilities to get around on the road as well as on the Webbie too =b
Frankly, I was even more taken aback by the staffs spoken English proficiency here. They really speak well! I guess staffs working in youth hostels are generally very easy-going and pleasant. So Hantang Inn makes no exception too. The staffs are very pleasant, and accomodating to serve us to their best.
I particularly like to thank them for assisting me with my Tibet trip arrangement at a very last minute notice. It was like my final day in Xian before i finalized on the Tibet trip arrangment. The Tibet entry permit won't be out till the day I board my Lhasa train in Lanzhou in New Year Day(which is just another 4 days away), and the nxt few days I am already out of Xian. What matters is the local agencies are going for their national holiday break soon and i'm fighting with time too!
Without them, I guess I would'nt have been able to make my trip to Tibet at all at such a short time of planning!
Within Han Tang Inn, there's a cozy bar which one can lounge in for a local TV break, cafe in or pub, or even have a game of pool or strumming the guitar strings. For me, I particularly like the dine-in with wireless access for me to do my next day plannings.
Throughout my 2 nights there, I slept in a 6-bed domitory and got acquaintances with various travellers alike.
Location-wise, Han Tang is located centrally, and the famous Muslim street where all the Xian snackings begins, is just a stone throw away! It was my major decision why I chose Han Tang vs the other also. Going to various city attractions were readily accessible with their local buses too. And what is different here is Han Tang also provides a personalized map that shows you how to travel around by means of public transport. How thoughtful it is!
Should I ever return Xian again, I will thank them personally with my deepest heartfelt gratitude, for making my stay in Xian such unforgettable & homely feeling, and for making my Tibet tour a dream come true too!
Highly recommended for similar-minded backpackers. I shan't said more, the hostel has a website. Let me know how's your stay esp after deciding on it from reading my review. =)
