Bamboo leaves stuffed with sweet rice are a great Guilin snack available all over the city and also in some of the restaurants.
The city also has some fine up market restaurants where you can sample typical local dishes. Many Guilin hotel restaurants have a nice environment to sample some of this food and the Chicken Balls with chestnut are especially good here.
If you fancy a break from Chinese food there are also some fantastic options available here. The Empire Garden Hotel Restaurant has a fabulous Japanese and French restaurant where you can sample good food amidst an elegant environment.
The little town of Yangshuo also has some surprisingly good western style restaurants where you can sit back and relax in peaceful and friendly surroundings.
Guilin is famous for its exotic dishes and the sight of dogs, birds, turtles, snakes and other weird and wonderful animals in their cages is not unusual here! Don't be afraid though, if you are not feeling especially brave, there are plenty of tasty options for those who prefer their food to be dead before it arrives at the table!
 City introduction

About Guilin
For more than two thousand years, from the Song to the Qing Dynasty, Guilin has been the political, economic, and cultural center of Guangxi.

Located in the northeastern part of Guangxi, Guilin has long laid claim to having the most beautiful scenery in China. With its mild subtropical climate, it is a pleasant place to visit at any time of the year. In autumn, when the sweet osmanthus is in bloom, the fragrance of the blossoms pervades the air. The shrub grows everywhere in and around the city; the name Guilin, in fact, means "forest of sweet osmanthus."

The area around Guilin is dotted with weirdly shaped karst pinnacles that appear to have spring up straight from the ground. They look like elephants, camels, horses, lions, lotus, bamboo shoots, and even emerald hairpins.

The city itself abounds in fantastic hills with spectacular caves. The best known of these are Reed Flute Cave and Seven Star Cave, with their stalagmites and stalagmites of stroking shapes and colors.

Guilin has many waterways. The Li River winds its way through the hills. An attractive park surrounds two glistening lakes -- Banyan Lake and Fire Tree Lake.

The boat ride from Guilin down the Lijiang to Yangshuo is one of the highlights of a visit to this beautiful area; the river is so clear that the astonishing peaks along its banks are reflected in the water as in a mirror.

Guilin has excellent transportation facilities, with railway links to all parts of the country and air flights to all major cities in China. There is also a direct air route between Guilin and Hong Kong. Special boats for touring the Lijiang are available and there are bus excursions to various scenic spots. Taxis are also available.

"I have visited more than 80 countries and over 100 cities. I have found that no city can surpass the beauty of Guilin. Guilin is really a bright pearl in China." - by former American President Richard
"No place in China is more evocative of the beauty of your country than Guilin." - by former American President Bill Clinton. "The beauty of the area is astonishing.
l came from the grey concrete jungles of Beijing and to see all the green makes me wonder why l didn't come here sooner."

"The attractiveness of Guilin lies not only with the scenery, but also with the people. They are open and friendly, as if the scenery is a reflection of its people."

Beautiful Li River
Why the Li River cruise is special
The Li River boat trip is one of our planet's most stunningly beautiful journeys. The smooth water exquisitely mirrors a fairy-tale landscape of conical peaks reaching for the sky (see photo). These limestone peaks are the vestiges of eroded ancient sea beds.

Li River tips & insights -There's something interesting to see from your Li River cruise boat along the banks of almost every bend of the river. You view graceful bamboo groves, farmers tending rice paddies, and lumbering water buffalos pulling carts or cooling off in the river.

-Another interesting sidelight is seeing fishermen gliding on the Li River on narrow bamboo rafts. Some use tethered cormorant birds to catch fish.

-The Li River vista is particularly mystical when flowing mists weave themselves around the peaks, hiding then exposing them in moments of surprise.

-There are dozens of tour boats, each about the size of a medium sized tug boat. They head down the river from Guilin to Yangshou city in a conga line, one closely following the other.

-The tour boats have open decks for observing the scenery and indoor tables for sitting and eating lunch (the boats have small outdoor kitchens stretched across their sterns).

-When water levels are low, the cruise tours begin their journey halfway down the Li River cruise route, not in Guilin.

-The tours end in Yangshou. A bus returns you to Guilin (an hour long trip on a paved road).

- Select a tour that gives you ample opportunity to explore on land the beautiful Yangshou countryside before heading back to Guilin.
