5.19.09 Captivating Capri

A lovely day in Capri!  (Emphasis on 1st syllable:  CAP ree)

Amazingly, we spent ALL our money in just ONE day.  But it was worth it!  Prices are for all 4 of us and include tips.

  • We took the train our Pompei station to Sorrento (12E round trip)
  • Walked waaaay down to the ferry port
  • Hydrofoil Sorrento to Capri (98E- yikes!  But Lia was half price)
  • Blue Grotto and Island Tour boat (38E-he said Lia was free)
  • Rowboat from the big boat into the cave of the Blue Grotto (more on that later)(35E).
    Island boat tour
      Italian lunch was delightful (35E).
  • Limoncella, the Capri lemon-liquer (5E) is to be served straight up, chilled.
  • Perfume from the Monestary using natural products from Capri (140 for 3)- very special!
  • Iced lemonades (6E for 2 drinks)
  • Funicular (a train to get up the steep cliff) was about 12E round-trip (Lia -free)
  • Pebbly beach playtime (free)
  • Hydrofoil back (Diet Coke on board 2E)
  • Walked up the hill in Sorrento
  • Train back to Pompei
  • Gelato at the shops lining the street (9E).

  • Laundry- 1 load in only a washer, line drying (3E).
  • Did I miss anything?  Whew!  Wouldn’t want to do that everyday!

But the experience was priceless!  Capri really is a captivating island and with the boat tour around it and the relaxing lunch, we really experienced the best.  I’d done significant research in advance, so we knew where to go and what was special, like the Perfume.  We girls are just thrilled with our perfume, which we had planned to get in Paris, but forgot to go to Caron and Sephora was just overwhelming along the Champs-Ellyses.  So this was a very special treat.  We also got to see the factory where the perfume is made!

One more highlight:  The blue grotto is a cave that requires getting 4 people max into a rowboat, from the larger boat.

Then the rowboat pilot steers you up to three intimidating men sitting in a little boat, handing out tickets for 10.50E each.  When we reported US citizens, before going up to the tough men, our rowboat man grimaced.  I asked him why and he said, “Today you are from England.  I will get you a better price.  England.”  I didn’t say anything and he respectfully rowed up to the men, although it was a little hesitant, like we were approaching royalty and had to be invited up first.  It was all quite odd.  The three macho men never really seemed to focus on anyone in particular and we just sat quietly until our money was handed over and tickets were returned to our rowboat man who gave us the change and tickets.  He later said that Lia and Charles were half of the 10.50 E advertised price.  I’m telling ya, it was weird.  I’m not sure what power the macho men yielded, but they had it. That’s all I’m saying about that.

We then had to lay down in the bottom of the rowboat while the rowboat man pulled a chain and lay back himself so as to skinny into the cave.  Of course only one boat at a time could enter or exit.  Inside, the water was a neon blue from the sun coming into the cave and water.  It was an amazing view while our rowboat man did a figure eight in line with the rowboats ahead of us, several of them belting out Ol Sole a Mia inside the cave " I must say that our guy had a great voice!

Then we exited the grotto, listening to our guy talk all the while about the special tip we owed him.

Exceptional Italian lunch
Having experienced this in Guatemala, I knew to wait until we exited to hand it to him so that we didn’t have to hear any guilt talk, although it was a healthy tip.  I told him, “Oh yes, you get us safely back to that boat and I’ll give you that special tip.”  Ha!  You just can’t go to Capri without experiencing the Blue Grotto!

We met many tourists today and enjoyed a couple from Dublin, many from England, and folks from all over, including the Florida woman with baby from the Napoli train yesterday!  It is a high end vacation destination and the people were very nice, fresh, new tourists.  We feel weathered and leathered by comparison, and not nearly as fashionable.  Ah well!  At least we smell good with our lovely Capri perfume!

Sorrento was very crowded with tourists, although it is a nice town.  If you’re going to enjoy the Sorrento peninsula, Napoli, Pompei, or Capri, then it is a perfect home base.

Pictures will have to tell the rest of the lovely story.  Capri is a stunning place that I’d love to return!

A fresh ravioli alfresco dinner at the RV was held in the lovely sunset.  Italy is a delightful place and we look forward to returning after Greece!
