2.12.09    Driving Day and Hot Springs, Arkansas

We took advantage of the time change and got up early so we could visit and get on the road to head for home.  Along the way we saw a sign for Hot Springs, Arkansas.  We grabbed our National Parks Map (that we got when we bought the Annual Park Pass- love it!) and sure enough!  We were going within 30 miles of it!

Well, we can’t let a National Park slip by and detoured, stopping at Cracker Barrel for dinner.  Whoo-hoo!  Then we went in search of the campground, having called ahead to make sure it would be open.  We passed a not so nice part of town, then a delightfully touristy downtown with the NP Visitor’s Center smack in the middle of the commercial center, and then up a mountain road with switchbacks to a viewing tower, high above town.  The tower was closed but the night sky was clear and the town of Hot Springs twinkled below- lovely view!  Ciao crawled back down the mountain in first gear

We located the NP campground on the NPS website.  Thank goodness for Verizon Aircard so we can get internet wherever we have cell service!  The campground is called Gulpha Gorge Campground and is located on the east side of town.  Trails appear to connect it to the mountain.  We self-registered at the dry campground ($10) where there are a few tenters nearby.  We haven’t figured out all the hot springs facilities yet, but will figure it out tomorrow.
