Dikke truiendag
February 12, 2009
Tomorrow is "dikke truiendag", so the university is going to dropp the heating down to 19 degrees. It is part of a Flemish government campaign to heighten awareness about energy usage and climate change, with the drop in temperature by a few degrees cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 7%. I'm not sure if the best approach is really to make a slightly cold day and encourage people to wear sweaters and provide free hot drinks to everyone, but at least they are promoting public awareness. For actual change though, it would be better if the public wasn't aware - just drop the temperature by half a degree every year, increase insulation and feed more wind power into the grid. Real progress will happen on climate change when people realise that their day to day lifestyle doesn't need to be effected.

Pizza on Oude Markt
Il Fornello Pizzeria is a small Italian restaurant on the Oude Markt. It was pleasant and friendly, we were given a nice table on the top floor, overlooking the street, with a candle-lit dinner and an offer of limoncello on the house following our meal. They also made Lydia's pizza into a heart shape, for the upcoming Valentine's Day, which really tickled her. The food though wasn't really to our tastes, a bit heavy and oily, but then we have found the same with all Italian food in Belgium, so maybe we are just used to the lighter fushion Italian cuisine in Australia and shouldn't judge so harshly.
