last stop for south america
Traveling for some time took a bit its toll on all of us, it sounds great at home to do a world trip but when one takes to many destination and does not allow too much time in between it can get tiring and a bit much changing form one place to the next worry about how to get there and where to sleep next day, thus we changed our plan slightly and use Quito as our last stop over in South America. Sadly as I had planes for Colombia and the whole of Central America…maybe a next trip will doe and only to those destinations… so next time it will be ..
Interesting to see or know why Quito was actually built in this valley and not in the next valley as it is not as warm here then in the next one.
Lovely and easy to get around in this city with the old part on the south and newer part in the north, it has a good network of public transport great sights but as I say some time we experienced rain and certainly it was colder then on the coast.
A 2nd reason to get to Quito was to be able to visit “el mitad del mundo” (middle of the world) actually it is at the Galapagos but since this place is no one lives there it was changed to Quito, about 15k to the north is the real line “00.00.00” Equator” and if you like to visit it just take a bus “yellow bus on Av. Americanao” right to the end past the airport to the terminal where you can hop on the bus to the town of Mitad del mundo for only .15C$ ( the return cost is .40C$??
The bus drops you right in front of the park to see the monument of the Equator. There at the square you will find folklore dancing life music and other attractions. A tat to full on with souvenir shops….
But the real interesting thing is not the park itself but just before you get in the park follow the road for about 200m to the right ( if you look towards the entry gate) and a short distance on dirt road follow a singe to INTINAN! Here you actually find the real GPS Equator N-S line, it is full of interesting facts about the gravity on the Equator and or in each Hemisphere this is demonstrated in small games, such as balancing an egg on a nail ( if you manage it you’ll get a certificate) further to this the location itself is actually nice too.
