The adventure of (yet un-named ) the gnome begins !

back in the warmer zone!

Puerto Madryn & peninsula Veldez

After yet a other long trip on the bus form Ushuaia (about 30.hr) we finally managed to get to Puerto Madryn.

It is a rather small city laid out in a bay with little “vegetation” around.

I must say the drive or scenery getting to Puerto Mont is rather “boring” not much to see other then savanna type shrubs.
why did we go there? Hmm well apparently it is the best place to see orca’s hunt for sea lion babies on the beach @ peninsula valdez.

The only thing one should not forget is to check the table of high tights as it is different form Puerto Madryn by about 5 hr. which made us be at the peninsula way to soon thus missed out on the Orcas.

Then again no one had seen them in about 5 -10 day’s anyhow.

In town there is a rather large beach area – people sun bath and play on the beach, several locations with “beach huts” one could seek refuge from the burning sun.

It has a big market for scuba diving (water temp. ~ 19’C/ 7mm suits) especially diving with sea liones., but at 500 pes I think this is excessive amount to pay.

We rented a car to get to the peninsular as we thought it would give us more time to possible see the Orcas, there plenty of car hire place but just be careful when renting most only rent for 1 day @ 250km free which if one does the peninsula is not enough, we ended up doing 420km trip but did not see all of it. Still a good time out.

The drive to the peninsula is again nothing special nor on the peninsula either nothing much to see other then shrubs, There is a fee to enter the peninsula park of 45 Pes / person and 5 Pes for renta car extra. From the park entry a further 20Km is a info center with plenty of good info about the history of the park and a skeleton of a southern right whale.

Most of the peninsula is gravel road and it should be a 60km speed zone, however most of the people do at least 100 -120km , the coast line is rather spectacular with plenty of viewing platforms or spots where to see interesting spots of the area.

There 2 places on the peninsula to stay and spend the night if one likes to extend the stay there to possible have more time on hand for Orca watching as the park closes at about 8 pm.
