anyone up for "Kuchen"
Day trip to Poerto Varas
Today we had a nice start with plenty of sun and we thought we would take a nice trip to Poerto Varas which is about 20 km north of Poerto Montt.
Hopping on the bus at the main terminal (mini bus " you pay the driver this time no bookings needed as they go every ½ hour or sooner)
We thought we might go further to the Volcano Osorno but after getting to the town we noticed there was a festival on. Once again we manage to run in to a festival with out prior knowledge. This time however it is closer to home then expected.
There is a big German club and still plenty of German influence around.
The festival is once a year and exhibits “kuchen” a German word for tart.
The main place had been transformed in a big tent like stage with a large table full of cakes for us to taste (after purchasing of a ticket of course " 1000Pes for a piece) and there is too a smaller table with about 25 cakes for judges to taste and crown the winner of the “kuchen festival”
Of course what is a kuchen festival with out German/Austrian traditional music… which is funny as it is chile to hear music like at the October fest.
The city house a new casino and the lake offers a beautiful view over the surroundings volcanoes. It is for sure possible to see in this town there is more wealth then in Santiago. Manny of the houses have a strong German architectural Influence. Most buildings are wooden with balcony and flower baskets in front of windows.
People bask in the sun and even hop in the lake for a swim, it looked cold to me but then again I did not try to go for a swim.
Later on the afternoon we got a bus back to Poerto Montt to find us again amongst a festival which had been on for a few days already. At the front of the Cathedral was a stage and several Band played for the public for free ( summer festival) Sadly I did not know the bands but the crowed loved the band.
Police had to close off part of the main street as people spilled on too with no regards to traffic at all. Kids climbing on to street signs and lanterns for vantage points, people singing and dancing to the music.
