Arrival in Guatemala

Today was incredible, I don´t even know what to say.  I couldn´t have asked for a better first day of travelling somewhere.  So I arrived in the Guatemala City Airport and went through ¨Customs¨. I think the gentleman just let me pass through because he didn´t want to deal with the language barrier.  The baggage carousel was this tiny little thing and there was only one in the airport.  I found this particulary humourous because on the wall behind a huge sign read ¨welcome to the most modern airport in all of central america!¨.  I don´t know.. perhaps that´s more of a commentary on the rest of the airports in central america than on this one...

Then outside the airport I tried to get my bearings.  I was trying to figure out the best way to get out of Guatemala City as fast as possible and on to Antigua when I was approached by another traveller, a British guy, Jon, who quickly became my friend.  He didn´t speak any Spanish so I worked out a deal and got a decently priced cab direct to Antigua, probably still a dumb newcomer move, but we both wanted to get to Antigua fast.

Jon told me that he was an engineer that had been working in Norway for the past 6 years and had recently moved to the states to work.  He had come to Antigua to visit his Norwegian girlfriend and her sister.
