Sundown in the Tasman Sea
May 1, 1985
The Kapiti Coast region is a difficult drive due to the narrow highway squeezed between the water lapping the rocks on one side (Tasman Sea) and the rugged scrubby hillside on the other.
Pouring in and out of Wellington are thousands of vehicles who all have to negotiate this horrid stretch of road. Many don't make it as they come to grief, meeting each other head-on.
The NZ government is planning a second route into the city through the hills but I won't see it in my lifetime.
Part of the reason I believe so many people crash in this area is that the scenery out towards the Tasman is breathtaking. Off the coast lies Kapiti Island. This is an animal sanctuary where they are breeding our endangered species in an effort to make them self sustainable back on the mainland.
As the afternoon draws on and the sun sinks lower toward Australia the sights become harder to resit.
