On the Edge of Porirua Harbour
December 18, 2008
Paremata sits just North of Porirua on State Highway One and it is here where I drive over the bridge crossing the harbour that i know I am just a stone's throw from the Royal New Zealand Police College. That generally means it's time to do some work or some learning.
The place is small but the village has the water lapping up around it on every side so it's a place where anyone can enjoy the water.
From the little bridge crossing the harbour you can see a line of boat sheds.
These were the focus of the District Council a decade ago as they became places to live instead of places to house your boat. It was the avoidance of local taxes that attracted the residence and New Zealand's favourite poet, Sam Hunt, was one of the residents taking advantage of the loophole in the laws.
Nowadays these sheds have become more habitable than they once were and if they are in fact housing anything now, it's more likely to be the members of the yacht-club prior to them hoisting their mains'ls to sail the oceans blue.
