Catching the plane to Las Vegas turned out to be a bit difficult. We were supposed to leave at 7 am on August 15 from JFK.
We hadn't counted on the subway taking 20 minutes to arrive. After that it took a while to get from the JFK Subway to the right terminal, with the Airtrain (which took the wrong loop around the airport for us...) In the end it all added up to enough time to be just too late to check-in. Anyway; hands down for US Airways: we were rebooked to a new flight for free!
We let him book us to a flight from Newark, since that would be the most time efficient giving the circumstances. So we only had to get to Newark for that one... Thanks to the taxi-driver we didn't get a 200-300 dollar taxi charge for driving there. There's a flatrate from and to JFK for Manhattan. Newark doesn't have a flat-rate, so you're on the meter there. The tax-driver was kind enough to tell us that much. Instead we took a bus from Manhattan. The busses leave near Grand Central Terminal, but it was searching a bit for the right bus-line. (I think it was on 40th or 39th Street) The trip costs just a few dollars, so it's a good alternative to the taxi and the time it takes is decent enough.
When we finally arrived at Newark, all procedures took a while too. Cchecking-in again and getting through security-checks resulted in missing the plane again, in just a few minutes. (taxi-ing from the gate...) At least our suitcases were on the flight this time. (Which is strange with all the hightened security nowadays. That also reminds me: getting (too much) fluids onto the plain isn't a problem either. We had problems with that only once.) Again we were rebooked to the next flight for free. The next plane from Newark would depart in 5/6 hours and to be sure we stayed there. Adding to the bad luck it started raining with thunder. Therefore our next flight got delayed for a few hours before finally departing.
So my advice: don't miss your flights :) Saves you a few sleepless days. In Las Vegas we had to take and drive our rental right away...
