Take to the Christmas skies

Brooklyn Travel Blog › entry 2 of 14 › view trip summary

Headed to the east coast to receive the Jordanian desert wind at the Big Apple. This would be my first trip east of Salt Lake City...my first proper visit to the east coast. We scoped the local cupcake & donut bakeries, the birthplace of New York pizza, scoured the subways of Brooklyn & the ghostly whispers of Coney Island, laughed at the HaHa holes of Time Square and ran circles around the squirrels of Grand Central Park ^^ (photos curtesy BM)

Quintessential Brooklyn Hot Dog Eatery
My first meal upon landing in New York New York was here at Hot Diggity Dog. I hadnt really much of a clue what being "Brooklyn" means, but i was assured by my hosts that Diggity was as Brooklyn a hotdog stand as you can get. It was right around the corner from our apartment so we donned our jackets and took a swing around the block.

There were three of us as we piled into the small storefront, as most storefronts in New York are small, so perhaps my assessment of "not good for groups" is a little off, but we took up most of the space as we stood studying the menu on the wall. My brother has been in Brooklyn for three years, and on this block for about a year, and he & his housemate had never been inside before...which seems quite normal really...one doesnt often go to the local places if they deliver hahaha, which they do.

To break the ice when we arrived to the empty place, i noticed the main guy eating pretzels and dipping it into something, so i offer an observation: "Breakfast of Champions?" He responds by saying, "Its good, here try it" and hands me the entire bag of pretzels and his dipping vessel. So i take a pretzel, and dip it into the mystery concoction, which turns out to be nacho cheese and chili hahahaha!@! "Pretty good huh?" he booms! Dunno really what to say myself, other than, "interesting." But his friendliness and demeanor instantly set us all at ease. He introduced himself as Billy, the owner, so we said, "Hi" to Billy, the owner. Totally kool kat!

A few minutes of silent study was broken by Billy behind the counter saying, "Yep, thats the Windsor Dog!" Whats scary is that all three of us were staring at the Windsor when he said it...i guess he knew his stuff. Let me explain: the Windsor is a hotdog, wrapped in pastrami, topped with sauerkraut and a spicy sauce. That didnt stop me from lining the sides with ketchup & deli mustard though, but i got my dog first and by the time the others got theirs, i was pretty much done inhaling my Windsor. Its snappy, spicy, wet, sharp, and rich. Doesnt give one too much of a challenge to chew on but it's pretty buttery as hotdogs go. We even chuckled as he explained his Billy Cheese Steak Sandwich hahaha!!

I wouldnt go so far as to describe this place with any roses or fanfare, but i'd totally swing in & out as i passed by again. The service & "management" were really kool, and you'd always have a friendly face in the neighborhood. I would highly recommend anyone in the Prospect Park area to check it out. I actually prefer its tame facade, compared to the likes of the Midtown hustle & bustle. So swing by and grab a local dog ^^ Diggity!@!

Awesome! They used to have one down in Capitola Village...probably more than 10 years ago. My dad would order me and my sister Chocolate Chip cookies and the guy there would put them on the grill so the chips would melt! MMM...I wonder if it's the same people!!
