Pleasantly surprised

Another very very long day driving today - at least we had the beautiful scenery to keep us company again. It’s not that we’re getting a little sadistic as we head towards the second half of the tour, or that we love driving that much, but other than a roadhouse after about 300km’s there simply isn’t anywhere else to stay. Not unless you fancy driving for hundreds of kilometres off the beaten track to one of the many cattle stations out this way. Alas, the campervan company won’t let the beast go off-road, so anywhere with more than 500metres of unsealed roads is out of bounds; they have no sense of adventure.

We’ve noticed that since leaving Katherine heading west, hardly anyone else is making the same journey.  There have been plenty of Wicked Campers going in the opposite direction, but nothing going our way. There does seem to be a severe lack of any traffic going the same way we are - I think today we were only past 3 times in over 600km’s…..and that was the same car that obviously kept stopping for some reason.

The driving is now divided equally between us, usually I take the first 100km’s before handing over to Wendy, who’ll then do another 200 ish before handing back. It does make a refreshing change to be able to just look out of the window and with scenery like the last 2 days just as well.

As far as campsites go, the one at Fitzroy Crossing was an oasis in the middle of nowhere. It even had something resembling a decent bar/restaurant as we drove up, so rather than cook tonight we were eating out. It’s been requested that I bring back the meal report, so here’s the one from tonight’s meal.

Evening Meal Report

Wendy - Cheese Garlic Bread Starter, Chicken Schnitzel with salad and fries.

Phil - Cheese Garlic Bread Starter (it’s the future), Grain Fed Sirloin Steak with pepper sauce, salad and fries.
